The Trailer House That Can Return to the Earth

PAN-PROJECTS builds Earthboat Cave in Nagano from CLT — a sash-free, sauna-equipped trailer house designed to leave no permanent mark and eventually return to the earth.

Earthboat begins with an idea larger than hospitality itself: that Japan's forgotten leisure infrastructure, from snow-bound ski resorts to seasonal destinations left idle for much of the year, can be transformed into year-round places of pilgrimage through accommodation that is a destination in its own right.
 The trailer house was the chosen vehicle, for a precise practical reason: it leaves no permanent mark on the land, and can be placed where building is not permitted. What London-based PAN-PROJECTS, the architectural practice co-founded by Yuriko Yagi and Kazumasa Takada, brought to that vehicle was an unusual material choice and a set of design convictions that transformed a modest accommodation unit into one of the most considered small structures in recent Japanese hospitality design.
These structures exist in nature, and if you think beyond their working life, fifty or a hundred years from now, they should be able to return to the earth.
The material is CLT — Cross Laminated Timber — which is not typically used for trailer houses. Standard practice reaches for light-frame construction, two-by-four timber or light-gauge steel, to keep weight down. But that approach, Takada notes, tends to produce a flimsy feel. CLT has genuine mass and communicates it. Its depth provides thermal insulation without synthetic materials. And crucially, it can — fifty or a hundred years from now — return to the earth. The decision was ecological and philosophical in equal measure, and it drove every subsequent detail.
The Earthboat Cave, the second model in the series and the unit deployed at Shirakabako in Nagano Prefecture, is a rectilinear CLT box with an external wall system of vertical cedar cladding and structural ribs applied under a consistent module rule — breaking down what would otherwise read as an undifferentiated container. Inside, a full-width picture window opens an entire wall to the landscape, achievable only because CLT panels require no beams or protrusions around openings. Every opening in the building is sash-free: fixed double-glazed units fitted into CNC-cut rebates in the CLT, held from the exterior, with only a small sill flashing as metalwork. A private sauna — built entirely in CLT, including the benches — is accessed from outside, reinforcing the project's central spatial philosophy: the outdoors is the living room.
Over two and a half years of development on the first model and close to a year on Cave, PAN-PROJECTS worked in millimetre-level dialogue with the CLT fabricator to pre-cut electrical conduit routing and LED recesses at the factory. A builder can now assemble roughly one and a half units in a single day. The digital revolution in architecture, Yagi and Takada suggest, lies not in form-making but in its capacity to generate meaningful change at a building scale — reducing processes, components, and costs while refocusing on detail and craft.
